Knitting

The earliest history of hand knitting can be traced back to the 3rd to 5th century AD. a pair of wool socks from Egypt was displayed in the VA Museum. The socks are made using "n å lbinding" technology, which is more like a more laborious sewing technique than knitting, in which yarn is passed through the eye of a needle and then looped through a series of loops. So it's not knitting technology. In fact, the earliest knitwear came from Egypt around 1000-1400 A.D., which were socks made of abstract patterns of white and blue.

Archaeological discoveries in many European cities show that knitwear was spread in Europe in the 14th century, and knitted stockings are particularly popular because they are smoother and more elastic than other fabrics.
There are many 16th century knitted hats in the VA Museum, which were found while working on a house in London. According to the location of the found and knitted hats, it can be judged that these hats were made for the middle class.
Hand knitted gloves are Spanish gloves before the 16th century. They are made of silver wire wrapped with red and yellow threads. They are made for bishops and decorated with religious patterns. It is made by circular round knitting technology.
In 1589, a pastor, William Lee, invented the first hand-made knitting machine. However, Queen Elizabeth I refused to grant a patent to William because she thought that knitting opportunities made workers lose their livelihood. Later, William Lee took the machine to France. The operating principle of this knitting machine is still in use today.

In many islands of Scotland in the 17th and 18th centuries, knitting has become a very important part of people's life. They make money through knitwear, because sweaters, stockings and so on are very useful for local fishermen to help them resist the bad weather.
By the middle of the 18th century, the sock industry was booming. Stockings produced in Britain are exported to other parts of Europe, and knitwear is also extended to other accessories, such as hats, shawls, gloves, bags, etc., but stockings have been the most popular before the 20th century.
Another very valuable 18th century knitwear collection in the VA museum is a carpet. It is considered to be a model of expert work. A knitwear that demonstrates technology includes hats, wool coats, mittens, and patterned carpets or tapestries
In 1816, the first circular knitting machine was built in England, which made it possible to produce commercial tubular knitwear with elastic properties, which was undoubtedly the best choice for underwear.
In the early 20th century, the commercial production of knitwear has developed from underwear to fashionable coat. With the interest in sports, outdoor activities and fitness, leisure sportswear is becoming more and more popular.
In 1920s, knitwear was widely used in the western world, especially pullovers, which became an important part of the daily wear of adults and children. Haute Couture has also begun to favor knitted products, such as Chanel's pullovers and Sweatshirt dresses. Vouge magazine also regularly publishes product patterns including knitting.
In the 1930s, Fair Isle was still popular in knitwear. This style, which combines creative colors to reduce yarn waste, became a major fashion for knitwear in the recession of the 1930s.
During the Second World War, the British wartime government asked people to make knitwear for the army and navy in winter. Because of the shortage of wool, many women would tear down the old sweater and make a new one.
After the war in the 1950s and 1960s, countries began to recover from the huge losses of the war. The knitting industry was also greatly promoted, and the color of knitting began to appear bright colors and patterns.
By the 1980s and 1990s, the popularity of knitting declined sharply, and knitwear was considered to be out of date.
It was not until the 21st century that the knitting industry was revived, and there were more types of yarn, such as natural animal fiber, alpaca, Merino wool, mohair, etc.
